Maze de Boer is a multidisciplinary artist. He composes art from a conceptual perspective, but the result is always visually appealing, often playful and easy to respond to. His work may be conceptual, but he likes to believe that it can be enjoyed with and without unraveling its concept.

Richard de Boer is managing partner at digital agency Oberon and a crypto enthusiast. He works as digital product strategist for clients like T-Mobile, Tommy Hilfiger and IDFA. He has a background in coding and likes to develop on blockchain technology.

A regular gambling machinePicture of the NFT slot machineA regular gambling machine

It is the first ever physical NFT slot machine. It offers a gambling game where the player always wins an NFT. The slot machines mints the NFT to a fresh crypto wallet. The player receives a printed receipt to access the wallet and the NFT in it.

This project is a derivative work on Maze’s earlier work Pick a Fruit 2021. It is named after a popular fruit machine from the eighties that is no longer produced. Maze modified casino slot machines, but they still have the same look: flashing lights and sounds which attracts people to come and play and gamble.

Maze intervened in the algorithm of the machine and turned it into a fruit still life. The reference to money has disappeared, only the fruit symbols remain. You can still play the machine, but only to create. Like a well-filled fruit basket on the table or as a still life on the canvas, Pick a Fruit catches the eye as a modern still life. The game has turned into composition and the player picks the fruits.

The slot machine

Pick a Fruit (un)wrapped offers a physical slot machine where players can play and win a digital artwork (NFT). It has a screen, buttons and a printer. It used an internet connection for payments and minting in NFTs in the blockchain. The slot machine works stand alone. Everything happens in the machine; payment, gambling game, minting NFTs, wallet creation and printing.

Physical artwork

The NFT can be unwrapped, meaning the owner can obtain a physical artwork with the same image. This is a handmade frame of 20x20 cm. This limited edition artwork can only be obtained by NFT owners and is bound to the NFT (numbered and signed by the artist).

The technology

The physical slot machine

Maze built a new custom slot machine with some recognisable features from the casino slotmachines from the eighties. It is 50x50x110 cm (LxWxH) and uses power and a (wired or wireless) internet connection to operate.

Raspberry pi and thermo printer

The slot machine runs on a Raspberry Pi. The game is written in JavaScript and uses the Pi browser. The engine runs on PHP and connects to the internet for payments and the minting of NFTs in the blockchain. We installed a thermo printer that prints the QR code of the crypto wallet private key. Players can scan this QR code to open the wallet on their mobile phone.

The code and NFT creation

The NFTs are minted in an ERC-721 compatible smart contract that runs in the Polygon blockchain. Polygon is an Ethereum side-chain, secured by Proof of Stake and enables scalable applications and non-fungible tokens. It is supported by major crypto services like MetaMask, Trust Wallet, OpenSea and Crypto.com.
